Fav songs 2013 - Queens of the Stone Age - "Kalopsia"

Song of the year from the album of the year.

In a year where the music world continued the trend of the "power of the single", Queens released their magnum opus in album form. An instant classic rock album (small c small r) that does everything it sets out to do.

This track embodies everything about the band's way of making music - "heavy enough for the boys and sweet enough for the girls" with killer riffs and luscious harmonies.

And of course this track features Trent Reznor on vocals and percussion.

Fav songs 2013 - Junip - "Walking Lightly"

I came by this track through the finale trailer for Breaking Bad, which drew me to the album. Great vibe, love the seamless mix of electronic and acoustic on this album. The year's most underrated album.

Fav Songs 2013 - Thundercat - "Heartaches + Setbacks"

An album I missed out on when it dropped, and I caught up on when listomania hit earlier this month, I've had literally had this track on repeat at times.

Great vocal, insane bass chops, and a sonic texture that transports you an cosmic alternate reality 1970s.

Favourite stuff of 2013

In 2013 I didn't get out to any movies, and I didn't catch too much tv - at least not enough to warrant a top 10 or even a top 5 list.

What I did do was listen to a lot of music. That's nothing new. Over the next few days I'll drop a few of my favourite tracks and maybe even finish my own best of the year list! Hey, I can dream, can't I?

I think back to all that I lost in 2013... Google Reader, iTunes Party Shuffle, my Blackberry 9780. Life could have been worse.

It was also my first full year with my newest best friend, my daughter, and at barely over a year she already seems to be developing a taste in music. At least insofar as what I'll play for her.

I pretty much lost touch with writing this blog, and so did the rest of the web, apparently. In my case, it's tough to bang out a post or two, let alone 250-500 words on anything when there's a kid tugging on your leg wanting to play. The blog may have suffered, but I made the right choice.

Avril Lavigne - Let Me Go ft. Chad Kroeger

Here it is: Canadian Culture ca. 2013:

This pairing would have been inconceivable ten years ago. Inconceivable!

Continues the trend of awkwardly jammed in product placement too (see that Avicii video I posted the other day). The first thing I did was check the record label... yup. Sony.

Long tail: a rebuttal to Lefsetz

The Man vs. The Myth: Lefsetz and The Long Tail

Response to the post I linked to earlier.

The Growth of the Network Media Economy in Canada, 1984-2012

Excellent read for anyone interested in the economics of the Canadian media industry. It's a long read with outstanding analysis. More must-read work from Mr. Winseck.

Quick takeaways:

-Newspapers and landlines are the only segments of the industry that are really in decline.

-Music industry is on its way up

-All this nonsense about cord-cutting is way overblown. Instead of Netflix and others taking a chunk out of the existing pie, the pie simply got bigger. A lot bigger.

The Most Important Thing You Will Read All Day

via the Lefsetz Letter, a really interesting look at how the music industry has become a blockbuster oriented business. So much for the Long Tail.

The numbers certainly do not come close to the trusted ’80/20 rule’ that many managers live by, which supposes that 80 percent of the sales tend to come from 20 percent of the products on offer. For music albums, it is close to an 80/1 rule – if we can speak about a rule at all. Even if we take a conservative estimate of what would be on offer in a bricks-and-mortar store at any given point in time, Anderson’s predictions that long-tail sales will rival those in the head are far off.

Viral bullshit as the new classifieds

Interesting piece from Jeff Jarvis. It also led me to this link: The soul of a new machine: Gawker struggles with the slippery slope between viral and true

Basically, unverified viral crap supplements journalism the way classified sections supplemented newspapers in ye olden days.

Raises some interesting questions about the sensationalism surrounding that whole crack-mayor thing. Page views are more important than accuracy under the Gawker/BuzzFeed/et al business model.

Saigon Sunday - Talk Talk - "Talk Talk"

This track helped us win 2nd place last Tuesday night at trivia.

The theme was song titles that contain the artist name. Other artists featured: Big Country, Queen, Jimmie Ray, Body Count, the Monkees, etc.

It's also a great song to type into a search engine. YouTube handled it well.

Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross - What If We Could

NIN dropped this one into their live set at Lollapalooza, which was a bit of a surprise. An ersatz 'solo' song dropped into a Nails set is unusual.

Worked pretty well into the set, gave it some breathing room as Reznor likes to do in the middle to 2/3 way of a NIN set.

Beck - I Won't Be Long

Beck just keeps coming with great songs, and the production is fantastic too. That low end! And the mix is so punchy.

People on Reddit don't know anything about sound in films

Link

Because I couldn't be bothered to post on the forum, here are a few tips/observations:

1) Make sure that the content you're watching/listening to is properly formatted for how you're viewing it. Netflix, Blu-Ray and Cable seem to want to give you 5.1 surround sound as a default even when you only have two speakers. Double check that your output is stereo.

2) Really? Every single sound mixer in Hollywood is incompetent, and to blame for you being a fucking idiot? Do you have any idea how the motion picture business, let alone sound mixing works? Even the explanations on the thread are not entirely accurate.

3) Using your TV to handle compression seems like a good idea but it'll probably do more harm than good.

4) This is so subjective and situation dependent that this post and the Reddit thread is pretty much pointless.

eBook reading: The Definitive Review*

*not a definitive review

This post is my response to the question, "Hey, How's do you like that Kindle? er... Kooboo? Wait, what's the name of that thing?"

The quote here serves somewhat as inspiration:

eBooks will never be replace analog books, and I suspect most avid readers wouldn't think that to be the case. Rather, I've learned through my 18 months with a Kobo that an eReader is a complementary device that allows you to read in different ways. A picture of a cat is a lot easier to take on the subway, for instance, and you could conceivably have take thousands of cat pictures with you on a long journey.

As an avid music listener in addition to an avid reader, the analogy I can reach for is home stereo versus portable music player & headphones. A home stereo likely has superior quality, you can play vinyl records, etc., but it's tough to take with you to work. What you lose in quality and experience is merely shifted to convenience. For someone like me who has high quality headphones and rips CDs as lossless files, the quality difference simply becomes experiential difference.

The basic difference between the formats is effective vs. efficient reading. Analog books allow for more effective reading; I can easily flip through pages both before and after the spot I'm currently reading. It's a non-linear experience. Digital books don't really allow for such a thing, because the reading experience is strictly linear. This has its advantages when you want to digest a text quickly, or if it's material you have already read.

I recently tried reading a chess strategy book on my Kobo, and man, that experience really highlighted these particular shortcomings. Chess books rely quite a bit on use of diagrams, and it was near impossible to flip back to diagrams then go two pages back to where I was reading. Good thing it was a library book, cause I would have been pretty peeved to have spent any amount of money on that book. I had a similar experience after loading seeing how the Pro Tools manual would hold up. It didn't.

So there it is. eReaders aren't necessarily good or bad, unless you're a raging luddite, and it's not like any sane person is going to set fire to their analog book collection any time soon, the same way that iPods aren't going to make most people toss their vinyl in a dumpster. They're different media using different spaces

Bobby Owsinski's Big Picture Production Blog: Steely Dan "Hey Nineteen" Isolated Guitar

A sort of Coachella 2013 review

I spent a good portion of Friday and Saturday night with the Coachella stream on one screen and the Jays game on another.

Lots of surprises on the weekend - I was blown away by the sets from Blur and Hot Chip, and disappointed with Japandroids and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who seemed to be unable to stay in key throughout their sets. It could have been the fact that the stream highlighted and magnified the deficiencies in the performance... being in the audience might have made it much more enjoyable.

I'd assume that they're streaming it again next weekend, but I have no idea. I'd watch it again, for sure. Looks like it's the same set and running order except Blur and the Stone Roses are swapped on Friday night.

Also, thanks to Ian for reminding me that the stream was happening.

Saigon Sunday - Whale - Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe

Back in the Saigon Sunday heyday, it took me forever to learn the name of this song and the artist. I couldn't even Google the song because for the most part the lyrics are absolutely unintelligible, which I suspect was part of the the point of the song.

I recall reading somewhere that the group was made up of a bunch of Swedish journalists, but that's not evident on their wiki page.

In any case, this is one of those tunes that could truly be considered a "one hit wonder", destined to show up as a link in backwoods blogs twenty years on.

Roxy Music - Love Is The Drug

Been on a bit of a Roxy kick lately, listening to Siren for the first time this week. Intro bassline copped by Talking Heads on "Psycho Killer"?

David Bowie's 'The Next Day': Above criticism

Dull, too long, a shadow of past works. 3/10

That's my review in a nutshell.

What I'm really interested in writing about is the way in which the music press is rushing to heap mounds of praise on to this mediocre album.

Check out the metacritic page for the record and you will see what I mean. The two reviews I most identify with, at Exclaim and PopMatters, raise a couple of good points.

In the Exclaim piece, here's the money line:

The Next Day is a good latter-day Bowie record, worthy of at least a few listens, but since it's so evocative of his earlier, better work there's little reason not to put on Scary Monsters or Heroes instead. At the very least, it'll save you from The Next Day's lyrics.

Nailed it. So true. I have this conversation with friends all the time. If an artist's new record makes you want to go back and listen to their previous work, it's probably not a good record.

The PopMatters piece is interesting because the score, 5/10, doesn't match the scathing criticism dished out by the reviewer. Unlike the writer, I'm a huge Bowie fan, yet I can accept some of the points he's making. The commenters, however shit all over the guy because of some imaginary 'bias' against Bowie, as if the former Thin White Duke is somehow above negative criticism now.

When the single and album cover were first released, I was astonished that the first offerings seemingly conjured out of the ether could be so poor. "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)" is a decent enough single, and it would slide nicely into the first half of Reality. The rest of the cuts are generic and frankly boring, not to mention the appallingly stupid cover art.

My guess is that if this album were released in 2004 as a follow-up to Reality, the praise might not be so universal, as most of the rock-crit world would not be lining up to pay what they perceive to be their last respects to Mr. Bowie.

Nine Inch Nails on Hard Copy

My brother points me to this clip from Hard Copy, where NIN and Trent Reznor are involved in "The Case of the Mysterious Video Tape". I'm guessing it's from around 1992 since we hear "Suck" from Broken around 3:14 into the piece.

Jeff poses the question - "Are happenings like this still possible?" - I'd say if this type of event happened today it certainly wouldn't warrant 10 minutes on a major tv program, maybe five seconds of most people skimming over a link.

I love these long lost artist mythology-building pieces. Neither this show nor NIN were on my radar at the time, but now it's fascinating to look back and see how the mainstream media at the time handled one of my now-favourite artists.

NXNE announcements

The first bunch of bands have been announced for NXNE in June.

I'm more partial to the smaller venues and bands, but if The National and their dozy pop-rock are the biggest act of the year I've either underestimated their popularity or this looks to be a down year. Who exactly are the rest of those bands?

Haim - "Falling"

Breakthrough Group of the Year is an interesting category: Hey Ocean!, Monster Truck, The Pack a.d., Walk Off the Earth, Yukon Blonde. Walk of the Earth would be a cool winner, since they're pretty much an all-web thing.

Cadence Weapon - "Hype Man"

Sweet new video from Cadence Weapon:

Taking a look back at "American Boy"

This past week this post received the most traffic to this blog. I haven't figured out exactly why, but I thought this would make a good opportunity for some reflection.

The context for the post was that I had just returned from a month-long trip to Europe with my brother. We heard U2 every single day we were over there. Four different countries, a few plane rides, train rides, a bunch of pubs and coffee shops, and without a doubt we would hear U2 at some point.

I'm sure someone visiting North America might find something similar, but the sheer breadth and diversity of venues, and the distances traveled... I dunno, I guess something about that stuck out to me.

We also heard lots of Stevie Wonder and Madonna as I recall, but it wasn't the same.

The definite theme song of that trip was this tune, "American Boy" by Estelle and Kanye... featuring a pond-crossing performing duo plus a bangin' beat; which is to say the song featured, for us, cultural context as well as the content to match. This song will forever be tied to that trip for me. Great song, catchy hook, butchered nightly by karaoke singers everywhere.

A couple people brought this one to my attention, the new Prince song:

So I guess I can make that two of my favourite musician-legends putting out terrible music this year. The difference is at this point I expect Prince to be putting out music that's dashed off and terrible, whereas Bowie came out of nowhere to drop that turkey on us.

From SNL this past weekend, it's the best Lonely Island song since "Boombox", and maybe their best one ever. Great production, that's a super catchy beat.

It features an Adam Levine-satirizing Adam Levine, and Kendrick Lamar with a performance that bests the two live performances he put in on the same show.

A song that transcends the 'comedy song' label and is in fact, simply, a great song.

This is about half of their second set. The video quality is rough but the sound is remarkably good.

Yacht Rock Episode 12

This article over at the AV Club sent me into a smooth fit of nostalgia for the great web series Yacht Rock. Though I must confess, I thought I had seen all the episodes, and did not realize there was a twelfth!

Nicely wraps up (?) the series with a double-length episode.

Watch the whole series if you haven't seen it... the show is a great satirical take on the music they've somewhat pejoratively termed 'yacht rock'.

It's also the reason behind me adding 'so smooth' to my catch-phrase heavy rotation.

The Daily Swarm - Best Thing You Will Read Today: 'The Only Black Guy at the Indie Rock Show...'

The Daily Swarm - Best Thing You Will Read Today: 'The Only Black Guy at the Indie Rock Show...'

Great read.

There are a multitude of uncomfortable situations to deal with: being looked at like a dartboard after someone’s fifth drink in a dimly lit dive, New York Times think-pieces on “blipsters” (as if “hipster” were invented as a white-specific term). And let’s not forget the friendly condescension: “You like this kind of music? That is so cool!” they say, as if they’ve seen some sort of unicorn. All of these are (mostly) subconscious forms of cultural gate-keeping, a “separate but equal” doctrine for the iPod generation. As a genre historically panned for its straight white maleness, indie rock fans of color are hardly ever quietly and begrudgingly tolerated in the same way as women and homosexuals; whether positively or negatively, people are far more demonstrative about how peculiar they think it is.

HMV Canada is fine... for now anyway

Definite sign of the times when yesterday seemingly every Canadian news outlet ran the story about HMV going into 'administration' (as they must call it in the UK) and not bothering to mention that the Canadian stores are under different ownership. This link has been updated since yesterday, but I imagine that some damage has already been done.

This is what happens when understaffed/intern-staffed newsrooms simply pick up wire stories from Reuters and publish them verbatim on their websites.

I just can't help but note the ironic congruity of two outdated media services - newspapers and brick-and-mortar music stores - swirling down the tubes together.

Now Magazine's Top 50 Toronto albums of all time

The 50 Best Toronto Albums Ever

A lot of odd choices, but the main takeaway is that it was likely someone under 30 who had final say on the list. No other way to explain why Austra is even on here. I like them just fine but putting them in the top 50 doesn't make any sense.

The Top 10 is decent... but putting The Weeknd and Rush back to back on any list doesn't feel right, as great as those albums are. We need waiting periods for albums before they are dubbed 'best-something-of-all-time', sort of like the five year period after baseball players retire until they can be elected to the Hall of Fame.

Nice linkbait on the mag's part though. Some interesting conversations happening in the comments too.

2013 Oscar noms are up

Whenever the Oscar nominees are announced, the first I thing I do is check the Best Song, Score and the sound editing/mixing categories. I guess I haven't been keeping up with my films this year cause I haven't seen any of these. Skyfall is at the top of my list though.

I figure Adele will take Best Song on the extensive marketing campaigns alone. When the song first debuted there were countless stories about how it was "the greatest Bond song ever", when that just isn't the case. It's good, but doubtful it's the best ever, and it's even harder to just make that statement before the song has even been released to the public.

As for the other categories, I have no idea whatsoever. Alexandre Desplat has done some good scores, so maybe his track record gets him the award this year.

I'd vote for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo soundtrack, but I'm heavily biased.

Magneta Lane back with a new EP - Witchrock

At Canadian Music Week 2006, I saw Magneta Lane perform as part of a showcase at the Horseshoe. I wasn't exactly blown away by their performance. They seemed stilted and awkward, more concerned with how they looked than how they played. I also have a memory of walking past them downstairs later in the night and saying 'great show' only to have the three of them stare blankly at me... *walks away slowly*

In retrospect, they might have been overwhelmed and intimidated by the setting. As the story goes, none of them were even 19 years old, so that would explain a lot. Industry legends, record execs and so on would all have been there... I forget who was on the rest of the bill, but it could have been Wintersleep...? Honestly that week was a bit of a blur so I can't say with any certainty.

In any case, the band has returned with a new EP, which was a surprise to me cause I had written them off after their last record.

So imagine my pleasant surprise to get a preview of Witchrock and hear that all this time they've been working on songs and refining their craft. Whereas their first EP leaned towards Strokes-like indie rock, this EP is a bit more in the Sleater-Kinney direction.

My favourite track is "Leave the Light On", a solid indie rock power ballad, which I'm always a sucker for. I'm also a sucker for anything resembling Stevie Nicks imagery (note the record title and video below).

It's a good move for a 'comeback' to start small and build back up from there. Hopefully by the next record they can ditch material like the final track "Lucky" which sounds like a leftover from their earlier era, and head further into carving out their distinct identity.

Magenta Lane's Witchcraft EP is out February 12

new Sally Shapiro – “Starman (feat. Electric Youth)” - GvB

New music from Sally Shapiro. Electric Youth were on the Drive soundtrack, which I finally saw last week. Reading the novel upon which the film is based now, which I also recommend.

That film had a great soundtrack, not just in terms of the Miami Vice-inspired tunes, but the sound design and editing were also fantastic. I won't spoil anything, but they made excellent use of dynamics in the film.

Wild Nothing was the most relevant & authentic band of 2k12 | Hipster Runoff

Praise for an album from Hipster Runoff...? *scanning for sarcasm*...

Wild Nothing was the most relevant & authentic band of 2k12 | Hipster Runoff

I had this as one of my favs of 2012, probably #2 behind Hot Chip though.

Born Ruffians in Ottawa

Here's a show I mixed on last year which has made its way online. I quite liked this one. Gotta catch these guys live some time.

Kendrick Lamar - "Swimming Pools (Drank)"

Apparently he's playing SNL January 26. I find that to be simultaneously odd and awesome. I imagine he'll play this track and probably "Good Kid"... "Backstreet Freestyle" and 'Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe' would likely need too many bleeps/edits.

It's official: Bowie has lost his mind

No words for this album cover... when I first saw it I figured it HAD to be a joke, but it's there on his official website...

For some reason the music press is falling over themselves to praise the new song that is in fact, not very good.

I will wait for the full album to pass judgment but at this point I'm stuck between rage and apathy with a dose of bewilderment. Why on earth would he release this?

If you follow the link to his website there's an interview with the designer of the cover that is absolutely ridiculous. I guess no one says 'no' to Bowie any more.

I also find it quite telling in all of these articles I'm reading that none of the writers or commenters are pointing out what a stupid idea this is for a record cover, and that the song really isn't that good.

His voice may sound decent but he's been processed all to hell and frankly he sounds a bit ill. I really hope this isn't the way he ends his career, I'd hate for him to go down the Bob Dylan career path.

Macintosh Plus - Floral Shoppe

Horrible band name, but this is totally my musical bag.

Take it as a joke if you must, but I can't help but dig the smoothness of Pages slowed down and chopped up into what could be a track from Burial.

Almost sounds like Michael McDonald...

Bowie returns!

And he should have stayed retired.

I'm about as big a Bowie fan as there is, so you can take my opinion with some weight when I say this is really fucking terrible. Not quite Hours terrible, but I'll reserve judgment until I hear the full album. At this point I wouldn't be able to justify spending any amount of hard earned dollars on this piece of crap.

I'm hoping this is some kind of joke. Heathen and Reality would have been a nice two-album punch to close out his long, storied, illustrious career... but this... wow.

This sucks, and I'm bummed.

Andy Stott - "Numb"

From the album Luxury Problems. Incredible dark, atmospheric electronic music.

Breaking Bad Season 5 music

While checking out the Breaking Bad Reddit thread, I came across links to all the music used on the show. That would have been pretty handy when the show was airing... Guess I'll be doing that when the show returns in July.

Berberian Sound Studio trailer

I've been seeing a lot of reviews lately for the soundtrack to this film. I missed it at TIFF but it holds particular interest for me as the main character is a sound designer on a film. Looks like it might have some meta-type elements, you know, like the film the character is working on actually is the film we're watching type stuff.

Can't find a DVD release for it, I'll just have to keep my eyes open.

Carly Rae Jepsen - On Tour

If this sort of thing is your bag, check out this Carly Rae Jepsen show I mixed for Much last month.

Daphni - "Yes, I Know"

I heard a track from this record but I didn't end up getting into the rest it... my mistake. This is great:

Alt-J - "Tesselate"

Catching up on all the stuff I missed from 2012... Here's the 2012 Mercury Prize winners, Alt-J (or, triangle, if you punch it into a keyboard)

Zeitgeist 2012 from Google

A pretty amazing recap of 2012 from Google:

Chills, I tell ya! Been showing this one to everyone, but forgot to repost it to the blog.
