A bunch of music lists

Digital Dream Door

Huge page of music lists. They're all some guy's opinion, but it's still neat to browse.

I've been looking at the Rock Instrumentals, Top 10 Metal Songs by Artist (cool design), and Greatest Funk Songs.

Watch out for that stupid talking emoticon guy that's also at the top of mininova.

From the department of very bad ideas

So Little Wayne is putting out a rock album in April. Judging from this first listen, it should be pretty fucking terrible. There's enough awful rock music being made by so-called rock musicians, we don't need the same being made by cartoon rappers.

Speaking of terrible fucking ideas, how about Chris Cornell's forthcoming album, produced by Timbaland and featuring John Mayer, Justin Timberlake and the guy from OneRepublic? This album is going to make Audioslave look like Led Zeppelin. Which they are not.

These two albums are slated to drop within about a month of each other. Maybe the earth will be sucked into a black hole created by the Hadron Collider before that, and save us all the grief, anxiety, clogged radio waves and psychic mindshare.

Oasis: Truly aggravating

Alleged Oasis attacker faces bumped up charge

The local hero who stormed Oasis' set at last year's Virgin Festival in T.O. will now be charged with aggravated assault. No word if it was the remarkably mediocre Dig Out Your Soul was the final aggravation.

In all seriousness, the guy shouldn't get off too easy... no performer should have to fear assault from the people who've paid good money to see them. But if there was any band who deserves to be slapped around a bit for being utter assholes, it's Oasis.

I say let the two of them duke it out in the ring and put the whole thing on pay-per-view.

Awesome Isley Brothers tune

Check this one out:

Isley Brothers - Footsteps in the Dark

---

Ice Cube sampled it for "It Was a Good Day", which is also an awesome tune in its own right.

Mark your calendar

According to popular online music magazine Pitch-fork, the Junior Boys are releasing a new album March 24! Yay!

Here's the Oscar Peterson-scored video the title, Begone Dull Care, refers to:

Great one. I saw this on the Movie Network a couple times without knowing what it was. It drives me nuts that the cable guide info shows the movies but not the shorts that usually run in-between.

Last year I took out a VHS (yeah, VHS) copy of Norman McLaren's works from the Toronto Public Library. I highly recommend checking that out. It's a real piece of artistry and "Neighbours" is classic Canadian film. Of course, you'll have to scrap the Blu-ray and dig up the archaic tape technology, but hey, it'll be worth it.

---

Here's a non-album Junior Boys track which is basically a mash of their tunes "So This Is Goodbye" and "Under the Sun". Hopefully the forthcoming album will be as inventive and full of creative energy as the album's namesake, rather than a strong recapitulation of their previous moods and motifs. Not that I won't be buying it the day it comes out or anything.

Boyle/Morrissey: Separated at birth?

Yeah, totally.

My prayers: Answered

Music Driven Video Games Appear to Have Peaked

Finally! The less the world has of this, the better. Unless it's a Music Mogul game from Maxis... that would be awesome. But then I would tell an agent or a band manager and they'd say "It's nothing like the real thing."... and I would have to shut my mouth.

Of crossovers and sell-outs

Reading my wonderful xmas gift copy of the Pitchfork 500, I'm reminded of Marvin Gaye's sell-out disco crossover tune "Got To Give It Up (Part 1)":

Got to Give It Up - Marvin Gaye

Which is a pretty similar groove to LCD Soundsystem's crossover hit "Daft Punk is Playing at My House":

And I'm also reminded of an interview of James Murphy of the above band saying he'd turned down working with Madonna for whatever reason. I think he's fucking nuts for saying no.

Imagine the castle you could rent with that money.
Imagine the gear that you stock into that place.
Imagine the fridge full of drugs the craziest of all rock stars would have in a place like that.

Sell-out or not, I would have taken the money.

---

Anywho, getting to the point, here's the last Madonna single:

Give it 2 me - Madonna Ft. Pharrel

So did Madonna hire Pharrell & co. to produce an LCD-ified Marvin Gaye ripoff? Perhaps. I guess the moral of the story is: Madonna always gets her way.

Happy New Year!
